The construction of the main Vidin church on the Square of Tolerance dates back to 17th century, when a first wooden church with this name was built. Here, on 6 December, 1868, the Metropolitan of Vidin, Antim I, who later became the first Bulgarian Exarch, declared the separation of the Vidin Bishopric from the Constantinople Patriarchate. Until 1900, a new church was built and consecrated. The interior was completed in 1926. The Cathedral is the second largest Bulgarian church, after the monumental St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. The central dome is 33m high
