The chain is 80 km long, with the maximum width of 15 km. Fruska gora is not very high - the highest peak is Crveni Cot, 539 m above sea level - but the contrast with the surrounding lowlands, creates an impressive view.
The mountain is under protection since 1960.
Lower parts of Fruska gora are covered with pastures and fertile fields, vineyards and orchards. Dense deciduous forests, which cover 90 percent of the total area, can be found on higher grounds, above 300m. The fauna of the mountain is also very diverse - from does, bears and large number of insects and birds, to deer, which are bred in the hunting reserves in the National Park.
This heavily forested mountain, situated on the edge of Pannonian plain, used to represent a natural shelter for the people. Consequently, the area is abundant with important historical monuments. The most significant are 16 orthodox monasteries, mostly built in the XV and XVI century. For centuries, they were a stronghold of the Serbian people, preserving the tradition, language and culture. At present, the monasteries are valuable monuments of the Serbian medieval and baroque architecture and art.
Sremski Karlovci, a charming baroque town on the slopes of Fruska Gora also played an important role in national history.
One of the most attractive destinations is Petrovaradin fortress - built by the Austrians during XVIII century, it is the second biggest fortress in Europe, and the most secured Austrian fortification of the time. Nowdays, Petrovaradin is a venue of famous EXIT music festival, attended by more than 100 thousand visitors every year.
Just across Petrovaradin, on the left bank of the Danube, lies Novi Sad, second biggest town in Serbia and the capital of multinational and multicultural province of Vojvodina.
The gastronomy of the region is very specific, with a variety of fish dishes, local meat dishes and famous vines. Traditional restaurants on the Danube banks, called "carda", are places where visitors may enjoy both the food, and local "tamburitza" music.
Thanks to outstanding natural resources, wonderful landscapes, exceptional charm and beauty, that bring people closer to the nature, Fruska Gora an ideal place for rest and recreation.
