The Republic of Bulgaria is located in South-eastern Europe, bordering Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey and the Black Sea.
It covers an area of almost 111 thousand square kilometres, inhabited by 7.36 million people. The population is predominantly urban, mostly concentrated in administrative centres of 28 provinces and the capital - Sofia. Since 2007, Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, NATO and the Council of Europe.
The strongest economy sectors are heavy industry, power engineering and agriculture, but tourism has also recently emerged as an important source of income. "Lonely Planed" ranked Bulgaria among its top ten travel destinations for 2011.
Thanks to its location, Bulgaria has been a crossroad for a number of civilizations and ethnic groups. As such, it is the home of many religious and other cultural artefacts - some of which are among the oldest in the world.
