The Upper Trajan's Wall is a fortification from the late ancient period. It is located in the central part of the Republic of Moldova, stretching from the Prut River to the Dniester River, from Leova city to near Tighina city. According to the data the length is about 120 km. Currently, the Wall has a height of 0.5 m.
The Upper Trajan’s Wall was built in the 4th century and served as a border between two rival local tribes, stretching over a distance of 138 km and traversing the entire plain of Moldova. On the valleys of the rivers where the walls pass, they are barely visible, but on the higher places, hills and plateaus, the walls are sizeable, reaching a height of 3-4 meters.
On the territory of the Republic of Moldova there can also be found one more fortification called the Lower Trajan’s Wall thought to be constructed around the 3rd century by the king of Visigoths Athanaric. It has a length of 125 km, stretching from Cahul district all the way to near Tatarbunar of Ukraine.
There are some opinions that the Trajan’s Walls are remains of the defensive constructions from the age of a Trajan Emperor or that it presented the demarcation line between the Roman and non-Roman world. There isn’t a common opinion regarding the origin, purpose and function of the Trajan’s Walls.
