Cantemir city is one of the youngest cities in southern Moldova, and was first certified as an administrative unit on 6 April 1973, when this city was given the name of the distinguished writer, scholar, and Prince of Moldova, Dimitrie Cantemir, on the occasion of celebrating 300 years from his birth. Its development is closely connected with the existence of a cannery in the area, with its product being shipped to all regions of the former USSR, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Austria and other countries.
Currently, Cantemir city is a significant cultural and economic center in the South of the Republic of Moldova. In 2003 Cantemir city became a district center of Cantemir district which comprises 51 localities, of which 1 city, 26 communes and 24 villages.
The network of cultural institutions include the House of Culture, 2 public libraries, “D.Cantemir” Museum, the School of Arts ,,Valeriu Hanganu".
The district House of Culture ,,Nicolae Sulac" was founded in 1977 with the formation of Cantemir district and is now a cultural and tourist attraction which promotes the cultural traditions and customs and the authentic folklore.
The History Museum “D. Cantemir” is located in the district House of Culture. The museum was created recently and has over 933 exhibits. Some items are related to life and activity of the great personality, Dimitrie Cantemir. The museum is of great historical and scientific interest to visitors. In Cantemir city is located the "Paradis" restaurant which has 300 seats, providing additional services for organizing banquets, receptions, etc. It offers to guests many local cuisine dishes.
Cantemir city has established relations of friendship and cooperation with many locations from the right side of Prut river, such as Iasi, Constanta, Vaslui, Campulung Moldovenesc, Galati, Murgeni.
