“Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel” Cathedral

From its construction until the present, the building constitutes the compositional center of Cahul city. In the Soviet era, the Cathedral almost ended up being closed, and was left off to slow degradation. From 1962 to 1989 the church has not operated. Despite these harsh times, the building of the cathedral was saved thanks to the civic position taken by the Administration of Museum of Cahul Land, pleading with multiple requests to upper bodies for the protection of this building as an architectural monument of the 19^th century. From 1970 to 1977 (the year of a strong earthquake in March which brought great harm to the cathedral), in the church building, a branch of the museum – “Art Gallery” operated.

In 1989, when the cathedral has retaken its activity of public worship, the church was repaired. Three large icons saved by the museum director, were returned to the church.
