Situated in the former Ottoman police station, built in 18th century and later on reconstructed in Bulgarian Revival style, the museum has since 1956 housed the archaeological department with prehistoric rock paintings of nearby Magura Cave, artefacts from Roman cites of Ratiaria (modern village of Archar), Bononia (Vidin) and Roman castle Castra martis (today: town of Kula), the medieval collection and items of Vidin city history under Ottoman rule (15th – 19th century).
