City: Esztergom

Country: Hungary

This city quarter of Esztergom was an independent village until 1895, when it finally became part of the town. Before, it was in property of the archbishop of Esztergom. First mentioned in 1230, it most probably dates back much longer. Archeological excavations during the 1980s brought to daylight ruins of houses of the 10th to 12th century AD. Most impressive in this city quarter, (English: St George`s Field) are the Baroque style Roman Catholic church of 1785 and the Neo-Classicism style Miklósffy Chapel of 1835. The latter one is the chapel of the huge cemetery chapel of the military cemetery. Here, 604 Hungarian and 175 Austrian soldiers of the 1848 revolution are buried – it is the biggest of its kind, recording the events of 1848.
