Hungary is situated in Central Europe, and borders with Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. It is a member ofthe European Union, NATO, the OECD and the Schengen Agreement
The country measures 93 thousand square kilometres, which is only 30 percent of its former territory. Until the end of the World War I, Hungary was a great power, but then it subsequently lost most of the land and one third of population - today, around ten million people live in Hungary, while the rest of Hungarians inhabit neighbouring countries.
Although its developed economy lies primary on different fields of industry, tourism is also an important segment of Hungarian state income: it is one of thirty most popular tourist destinations in the world, with a number of attractive cities, thermal lakes and the capital, Budapest, which has always been very attractive for visitors.
More than one half of Hungary's landscape is flat to rolling plains of the Pannonian Basin. The highest mountains are located in the Carpathians, in the North, near the Slovakian border.
The Danube runs through the country for 417 km.
