Natural jewels in the National Natural Reserve Devínska Kobyla
The trail is in the Devínska Kobyla hill, which is unique and very interesting locality for its thermophilous forest-steppe flora and fauna. The woods on the south-western slopes are remnants of the original oak forest. The trail is signed. It is selfguided trail. The most interesting natural spot is Sandberg, which is an old sandpit and also one of the most important palaeonthologic localities in Slovakia: hikers can find 14 to 16 million years old fossils of the sea fauna. The most interesting cultural sites are the ruins of Devín castle on a cliff at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers.
All year around visitable, the region offers something special in all seasons, but the best time is from April to October. The area is one of the windiest and hottest zones of Slovakia. The region is an ideal destination for lovers of nature. There are many hiker friendly accomodations and restaurants: for example Hotel Hradná brána (http://www.hotelhb.sk/) directly next to the ruins. The trail is easily walkable, the best for target groups: families / 50+. City District of Bratislava - Devínska Nová Ves and City District of Bratislava - Devín are easily accessible by bus from the town center of Bratislava (30 min. travel).
Hikers can also try cycling. Prices are friendly, food is cheap and delicious. "Bryndzové halušky" (small dumplings with sheep's cheese and topped with pieces of bacon) is the traditional food in this area, which is usually served with a glass of sour milk called "žinčica". Hikers also should try different sorts of cheese, either smoked or not: "parenica", "oštiepok", "korbáčik". The region is famous for its wine. Small Carpathian Wine Route connects many fenomens - wine, country, history and gastronomy in the region of Bratislava. This trail is an adventure designed for families and lovers of small mountains and castles.
