To refer to Komárno as a town within a fort is wholly appropriate. It has one of the most massive defensive systems in Europe, constructed by stages from the 16th to the 19th centuries. This unparalleled military monument is fitting candidate to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List; however, this is not the only tourist attraction in Komárno. In the town where the famous novelist Mór Jókai and Franz Lehár, the composer of beautiful operettas, were born, the visitor will also wish to see the confluence of two big rivers, the Orthodox church with its rich iconostasis, the unconventional gallery housed in the former military church, the Hungarian theatre and university, the attractive pedestrian zone, and the multi-cultural Courtyard of Europe, representing the architecture from various parts of Europe (Italy, Latvia, Austria, Poland, Ireland, Finland, Friesland, Iceland, Turkey, Transylvania, Crete, Malta and even Greenland).
