Situated at the heart of Ilok, the impressive Odescalchi Manor, also called the Odescalchi Castle, was built on the foundations of the late medieval castle of King Nikola Iločki, constructed in the golden age of Ilok in the 15th century. Nikola's medieval castle with the entire Ilok estate controlled great areas of Srijem. The castle and estate were given to Pope Innocent XI by the Habsburg Emperor Leopold. The Pope was an Odescalchi, and his noble family from Italy received it as a reward for their help in liberating Ilok from the Ottomans. The Pope's nephews, Italian aristocrats, extended the castle and adapted it to a classical Baroque style. Recently perfectly restored, it has again housed the Ilok Town Museum since 2010.

Medieval Fortress Walls

The outstanding (and restored) walls of the former medieval castle of King Nikola Iločki can be admired between Odescalchi Manor (Castle) and Church and Sanctuary of San Capistrano. Visit also the integrated former residence of Baron Brnjaković (18th century), where the Ilok Tourist Information Center is located.
