Visiting historic and cultural sites of Bratislava

The trail unveils Bratislava, which is a city that has kept and preserved its heritage parts and also has plenty of 21st century buildings and services. Bratislava or Pozsony in Hungarian and Pressburg in German, is the capital and largest city in Slovakia. The trail is not signed. It is selfguided trail. The most interesting natural spot is Danube - it flows through Bratislava. Bratislava has a very pleasant medieval inner city with narrow, winding streets, a hill-top castle next to the river Danube, and many historic churches and buildings to visit (St. Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava Castle, Grassalkovich Palace...).

The most visited places are in the old town: Hlavne namestie (Main square) and Hviezdoslavovo namestie (Hviezdoslav square, named after a famous Slovak poet). All year around visitable, the region offers something special in all seasons. The region is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and culture. The trail is easily walkable, the best for target groups: families / 50+. Bratislava is easily accessible by train, bus, plane (the airport is the largest in the Slovak Republic) or boat. Public transport is well organized. Hikers can also try cycling.

There are a large number of hotels and restaurants in the center of Bratislava in all price ranges so there are plenty to choose from. In this area the "kapustnica" (cabbage soup) is very popular meal, which is a typical Slovak thick soup and it can be prepared in a lot of ways (it may contain smoked meat, sausages and mushrooms). The area is famous for its wine, the slopes of the Small Carpathian mountains with clay-sandstone soils have perfect conditions for growing grapes. Vineyards in the region have a tradition going back over two thousand years. Small Carpathian Wine Route connects many fenomens - wine, country, history and gastronomy in the region of Bratislava.
