This most important church in town, also called Battlefield Memorial Church, is dominating the main town square, Széchenyi Square. To the left of the 30 m high temple is the new sculpture of King Lajos (Louis) II in steel armor, built by sculptor Imre Varga. The young Hungarian king died in the Battle of Mohács, on 29th of August, 1526. On 29th of August, 1926, the foundation stone for the votive church was laid and a ferroconcrete building was built on a surface area of 43 m x 36 m. Inauguration and consecration of the church was on 29th of August, 1940. The main altar is decorated with the golden Mohács Madonna, and frescoes record the legends attributed to her. The planned church tower was never built. Today, the Catholic church is used for religious services, but also for concerts.
