Pilis Mountains

The Pilis Mountains chain (23,000 ha) build the Eastern part of the Transdanubian Mountains and offer a beautiful landscape. The highest peak is the Pilis (756 m above sea level). The area is, thanks to its vicinity to Budapest, in the loop of the Danube Bend – a very popular destination and part of the Duna-Ipoly National Park, which was established, in 1997.

Pilis Mountains are famous for their caves. The majority of of the 334 caves in the Duna-Ipoly National Park are here. Benedek Elek Caving Club offers unforgettable speleological tours into the mountain caves.

The Pilis Mountains used to be a famous hunting ground for Hungarian Kings. Many hunting lodges have survived. Favorite places include the villages and hills between Pilis Mountains and Visegrad Hills, especially Pilisszentkereszt. Here, a road leads to Dobogó-ko (699 m above sea level), where one can admire an outstanding panoramic view on the Danube Bend. The Dobogó-ko resort is a year round attraction, as it also offers winter sports (skiing).
