The most central and most prominent park of Belgrade got its name from its location: Meydan (field, area) in front of the fortress (kale)! The empty ground, certainly, was used for military purposes. There was no hide for attackers. After 1867 and the departure of the Ottomans, the area became public ground with a promenade along the Sava river. The Monument of Gratitude to France was erected in 1930, the fountain “The fisherman” dates back to 1906. A staircase brings you to the Tomb of the National heroes, before the King Gate allows the entry to the fortress. To the East, you'll find Belgrade City Zoo (For more information, please refer to the section Belgrade, fortresses, Kalemegdan Fortress).
