Go by car or bus to arrive at this monastery, located some 30 km west of Tulcea. Celic Dere, part of Frecatei Commune, is named after the nearby river (Turkish meaning “river of steel”). The first church was built in the beginning of the 19th century. Legend has it that the church was founded by a certain bishop Athanasie Lisivencof. In 1841, Romanian and Russian monks arrived. The monastery houses a museum with religious objects, 20 rare books, antique handmade carpets and seven icons, one of them being the oldest icon in Romania (from Greek Mt. Athos).
