Country: Germany

Ehingen is a town in the south-east of Baden-Württemberg, around 23 kilometres south-west of Ulm and 67 kilometres south-east of Stuttgart. It lies on the southern fringes of the Mittlere Flächenalb conservation area, in a bend of the river Schmiech and by the northern banks of the Danube. With a population of approximately 25,000, it the largest town in the Alb-Danube district and serves as a centre for the surrounding communities. A part of the Ehingen district lies within the Swabian Alb Biosphere.

City Highlights

Three churches – or rather their church towers – form Ehingen's signature skyline. The Church of Our Lady, the Church of the Sacred Heart and the Church of St. Blaise and St. Theodor with their impressive Renaissance altars are original or converted baroque gems, and are just three of the many buildings of historical interest in the town. The fountain on the market square is an ideal starting point for a stroll through Ehingen. The Ständehaus here, commonly known as Wolfert Tower, served as an administrative building for the Swabian-Austrian estates from 1769/70 to 1805. The nearby Hospital of the Holy Spirit contains the collections of the municipal museum, and the former Franciscan abbey is today home to an arts centre. Other places of interest include a small Roman museum in Risstissen, a fashion museum, the Alte Säge (Old Sawmill) in Mundingen and, of course, the beer museum. Ehingen owes much of its reputation to its beer brewing heritage, not least because this tradition is as vibrant today as ever. Ehingen's beer culture can be experienced at every inn, and of course at the brew-pubs themselves, where you can relax and unwind after a stroll through the town, a look round the many attractive shops or a trip to the scenic Wolfstal valley near Mundingen.

The superb baroque architecture and glorious surrounding scenery make a visit to Mochental Palace a cultural experience to remember. A further incentive to visit is the Ewald Karl Schrade Gallery, which presents exhibitions ranging from Classical Modernism to contemporary art in rooms covering 2,500 square metres. Mochental Palace is also home to the world's first broom museum. The museum presents a light-hearted look at this seemingly prosaic everyday object in its many variations. Exhibits include an Allgäu house broom, a Kenyan monkey tail broom, a chimney sweeping brush and a pearl-embroidered table brush.

Culinary in Ehingen

Culinary diversity, organic produce and locally sourced delights: dining out in Ehingen is a real pleasure. The best example of this is the exquisite Hotel Restaurant Adler on Hauptstrasse, which has been named one of the region's top ten restaurants for the fourth time in succession by the renowned restaurant guide for Ulm, Neu-Ulm and the surrounding area. Whether it's traditional fare or gourmet cuisine, Ehingen offers both at the highest level. And what better way to enjoy your food than with a glass of fine Württemberg wine or freshly drawn beer from one of the four local breweries?

Avctivities in Ehingen

On the west side of Ehingen, in the Blauer Steinbruch conservation area, the terrain climbs more than 200 metres to the Ehingen Alb and 730 metres to the Stoffelberg. There are numerous walking trails all the way to Mundingen, which connect to the Ehingen Alb Besinnungsweg (path of contemplation). This special trail is a collaborative project initiated by various towns and villages and a wonderful addition to the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, an approx. 500km themed route that leads to outstanding examples of sacred and secular architecture from the baroque era.

With a quartet of centuries-old independent breweries, 43 different types of beer, two brewery museums and a whole host of related activities and events, you'll have plenty of opportunities to delve into Ehingen's beer brewing culture, which is as dynamic today as ever. Using the free Ehingen app for smartphones, you can follow the beer culture tour with pictures, text and audio. As well as tours of the town, the Ehingen app also contains detailed route and map information (with GPS) for the best cycling and walking tours in the region. And, with just one click, you can access information on restaurants and places to stay en route.

Of course, it's not just the hikers who stroll from one beer to the next in Ehingen. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich brewing history of this Danube town at any of its four prestigious breweries, each with its own brewpub, and in the Brewery Museum in the Berg district.
