Country: Serbia

Built on the grounds of a wooden church (18th century), the patron of this new church at the corner of Kralja Petra I Street and Kneza Sime Markovića erected in 1841, is St Michael the Archangel. Its common name is simply Saborna crkva (The Cathedral). King Peter I was crowned herein 1904. The church treasury contains relics of Serbian saints King Uroš and despot Stefan Štiljanović, and the heads of the Church and Serbia rulers of Obrenović dynasty (Miloš, Mihailo, Milan). At the entrance, there are the graves of Vuk Stefanović Karadzić (1789 – 1864) and Dositej Obradović (1739 – 1811). The gold-plated carved iconostasis was made by the sculptor Dimitrije Petrović. The icons on the iconostasis, thrones, choirs and pulpits, walls and arches were made by the painter Dimitrije Avramović.

Just across Saborna Crkva is the Patriarchal Palace, built in 1934/35 with columns an arched portal and the coat of arms of the Patriarchate of Serbia. The mosaic on the top shows St John the Baptist. In the palace, there is the church library and the Museum of Serbian Orthodox Church (please refer to the section Belgrade, museums, or Danube.travel, museums). Nearby is also the Palace of Princess Ljubica (Kneza Sime Markovica 8) with the Museum of interiors of Belgrade homes in 19th century”
