City: Budapest

Country: Hungary

Opened in 2008 as a private museum, today it is an official one, sponsored by EU since 2010, among others. Situated in the catacombs (caves, cellars, tunnels 10 – 15 m under surface, in a 10 km long underground labyrinth) of Castle hill, in Buda, the entrance is at the foot of it. During WWII, approximately 20 000 German troopswere hiding here, and they even built a military hospital in the underground. One can visit the human remains (including illustrative wax figures), and also  there is an exhibition about the medical history of WWII (1944/1945) and of the year of Hungarian uprising, 1956. There is also a German WWII command and coordination place and the post war atomic bunker of the then Hungarian government, used until 1980, where another exhibition is dedicated to civil protection and the years 1950 – 1970. In the entrance area, there is a souvenir shop, where one may buy historic military items and even curious things like the „last breaths of communism”, captured in small tin boxes.
