Located near the village of Cherven, 35 km south of Ruse, the stronghold was of enormous importance during the Second Bulgarian Empire. It was a military, administrative, economic, religious and cultural centre from the 12th to 14th century. The fortress was built on an earlier Byzantine fortress (6th century AD). Medieval Cherven is still one of the most important excavation sites for archeologists. Visitors can experience lifelike impressions of medieval public housing, lifestyle and military defence of those times, including seeing the tower (11th century AD) or the underground tunnel-well that supplied water during sieges of the fort.
