22 km south of Ruse, in the valley of the Russensky Lom river, there have been several rock monasteries. An outstanding example is the monastery complex of the Archangel St Michael which has outstanding preserved frescoes (13th/14th century). In 1978 declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the rock monastery complex is a top attraction for Ruse visitors. Established and inhabited in the 13th century by monk Yoakim, who later became a Bulgarian Patriarch, it was patronised by Bulgarian Emperors Ivan Asen (1218-1241), Ivan Alexander (1331-1371) and members of the Royal Bulgarian Court. Some parts were in use until the 17th century. Most famous are the frescoes of the Holy Virgin Mary Church.
