Ruse was the most probable birthplace of the popular Baba (Grandma) Tonka, a female Bulgarian revolutionary. Her parents were from the nearby village of Cherven (see section Ruse, fortresses). Married to a famous merchant from Ruse, Tonka Obretenova became famous for her help in the Ruse revolutionary committee (created in 1872) and for hiding its leaders. She buried the hero Stefan Karadzha and preserved his skull. Her four sons were killed or exiled. Her younger daughter, Anastasiya, married Zahari Stoyanov — a revolutionary, writer and publicist. The museum dedicated to her has been closed since 1992, due to restitution of the building. Read more at Zahari Stoyanov House Museum.
