Said to be the biggest Orthodox Church, worldwide, it was built at the place where it is supposed in 1594, the Turks might have burnt the relics of the most important Serbian saint, who founded the Serbian Orthodox Church. In 1894, a decision was made to build a new Christian temple for St. Sava. While a smaller church was completed in 1935, the building of the new church for a congregation of 15,000 just started in that year.. Partly finished in 1989, the whole structure plus the park around it was completed in 2004. In front of the area, there is the monument of Karadjordje. Nearby is the National Serbian Library.
