National Museum

The first and oldest museum in Belgrade was founded in 1844. The museum houses more than 400,000 items, including 5,600 paintings and 8,400 drawings of illustrious artists like Titian and Tintoretto, Rubens and van Dyck, Cézanne, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso or Chagall. There are also 34 different archeological collections. Visitors may admire the unique fish mouth style sculptures from the oldest Danube cultural civilization Lepenski Vir (7th millennium BC), the Vinca culture statues (6th/5th millennium BC), coins of King Radoslav 813th century AD), and paintings by Paja Jovanovic (19th century) or Sava Sumanović (20th century). A real treasure is the Miroslav Gospel (Miroslavljevo Jevanđelje) from 12th century AD, one of the most beautiful Cyrillic scripts ever. The museum also houses the archive of the Museum of Nikola Tesla, listed in the UNESCO Memories of the world. The museum is accessible for persons with disabilities.
