Established in 1912 by members of the famous Trajan High School, the museum moved to this modern building, a former manor house, in 1926. It is located next to the excavation area of the ancient Roman military camp of Drobeta. Serving as a museum of history and ethnology until 1945, it grew after 1945 to become the Museum of the Iron Gates region in 1972. The museum has a collection of natural species (fauna and flora in 2 halls), including an aquarium for Danube fauna and fish. The most important section is the historical / archaeological exhibition, arranged in nine halls. The ethnographic and folk art section presents the rich heritage of The Iron Gates region. The arts section presents artistic works from feudal until modern times. A new archaeological park will be built around the museum in the near future. There is also a bronze bust of Apollodorus of Damascus in the yard of the museum.
