The best places to enter this huge natural heritage area are the main access points Drobeta Turnu Severin and Orsova. It extends over 115,000 ha and follows the banks of the Danube for 140km. It is famous for the richness of its biodiversity, geology, traditional villages and multi-ethnic heritage. In the park you can see the Danube Gorges and the enormous, 55m high rock monument of Decebal, built 1994-2004. The park offers 15 marked tourist trails (www.portiledefier.ro/pdfen/trails.html) and accommodation in hotels and guest houses. Beware of snake bites!
