The oldest museum in Hungary started in 1802 with the collection of Count Ferenc Széchényi. Today, the permanent exhibition presents the history of mankind in the territory of Hungary from 400 000 BC to modern times. One of the master pieces is the old Royal coronation mantle. It also houses a medieval and Roman lapidary. Further on, the museum organizes the annual Budapest Museum Festival (end of May) and presents numerous special exhibitions. There are also special programs for children. Relaxation is offered in the Lapidarium Café. The museum is affiliated with other museums in the countryside of Hungary, for example in Esztergom and Visegrád.
