This stretch of the Danube (Hungarian: Dunakanyar; German: Donauknie) describes a part of the Danube around the city of Vác, around 30 km north of Budapest (Hungary). The Danube Bend is bordered by high volcanic mountain ranges, hills and the Slovakian flatland in the west. One third of the entire area is protected nature. See mountain creeks, canyons, lakes, salt-marshes, or swamps, or discover the forests and mountains during hiking tours. The most western point of this part of the Danube is built by the cities of Esztergom and Sturovo. Aside its highly attractive landscapes, the cities along the Danube Bend offer an enormous treasure of cultural heritage, namely Esztergom Visegrád, Vác and Szentendre. Bicycle fans will focus on the Danube Bike Path along both banks. The Danube and Hron rivers are both highly interesting for waterway tours, including white water rafting.
In summer, especially the river banks and river islands are attractive spots for holiday seekers. The Danube Bike Path brings further attraction. There are a series of offers to experience the Danube Bend also by boat. Daily offers from Budapest, or day trips organised by Mahart (Budapest or Esztergom Tourist Travel Office) are among these. Car drivers can experience the Danube Bend on the special scenic route between Szentendre and Esztergom.
