Budapest City Park, also known in German as“Stadtwäldchen”, was developed in 1817 by German landscape architect Christian Heinrich Nebbien (1778 – 1841). It is the major recreation area in the inner city of Budapest. The ice rink in the park is in January and following winter months, the major spot for lovers of all kinds of ice sports (see section Budapest, festivities and events). Its Southwestern entrance is at Heroes` Square. Its main attraction is romantic Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyad vára) with neo-Gothic style entrance gate and copies of marvelous castle buildings from Hungary and Romania. See also the Memorial of the Anonymous, built in 1903 by Miklós Ligeti, and visit the Museum of Agriculture (see section Budapest, museums). Most popular park attraction is the famous Széchenyi Bath, opened in 1881 (see section Budapest, Wellness & Spa in Budapest). Across the Bath, one may find the entrance of Budapest Zoo with Botanical Garden (www.zoobudapest.com/en; see also section Budapest, nature in and around Budapest). Also, there is the Budapest Great Circus (Fővárosi Nagycirkusz), with more than 300 000 visitors per year. Opened in 1891, the new building of 1966 has 1850 places. There is also the Entertainment and amusement park (Vidámpark).
Gourmets should never miss the visit to nearby Gundel Restaurant (see section Budapest, Places to eat), built in Art Nouveau style. The park houses numerous monuments. At the Eastern end of the park, one may find the Museum of Transport (see section Budapest, museums).
