Cathedral

The mighty post Romanesque style building with four towers got its facade in 1882 – 1891 only. Latest restorations took place in years 1962 – 1968. The history of Pécs Cathedral dates back to Roman times and 4th century AD, when the first foundations were laid. An early Christian church was here in 8th century. The construction of the Romanesque cathedral with two towers started after a fire in 1064. Upper-Italian, Lombard and Hungarian architects were working here. Fragments from those times are shown in the Lapidarium and Dome Museum. Two further towers were added in Middle Ages. After Turkish rule (1543 – 1686), several restorations took place, in 1807, for example. The Cathedral was rebuilt according to classicistic ideas of Mihály Pollack. The twelve statues of the apostles were created by Mihály Bartalits. The restoration works of 1882 – 1891 were conducted by Austrian Friedrich von Schmidt. Idea was to reconstruct the original. The church got new apostle statues in 1968, a semi-relief at the south gate and the marvelous bronze Millennium Gate in 2000, done by Sándor Rétfalvi. Inside, the organ was built by famous Pécs organ factory Angster. Oldest part is the perfectly restored Lower Church with five naves and columns. The Heart of Jesus and the Corpus Christi chapels are decorated with wall paintings by Károly Lotz. The world famous wall paintings of Bertalan Székely are in the Mary and the St Mór chapels.
