This world class museum temple at Heroes Square is a must! It houses the finest collections of international art. See Goya and El Greco, Titian and Monet, Caravaggio or Canaletto, Gauguin or Cezanne, sculptors, prints and drawings. See the Ancient Egypt Collection in the basement. In total, the museum possesses 100 000 art pieces!
Tickets can be booked one day in advance (online or at the ticket office desk). Vasarely Museum is part of this outstanding museum (see below). There are also several further temporary exhibitions. The building itself was a result of the Hungarian Millennium festivities, in 1896. It was built by Albert Schickedanz and Fülöp Herzog, until 1906. The base of the museum collection mainly derives from gifts: it started with the collection of Count Ferenc Széchényi, in 1802. Most important is the former Eszterhazy collection. There are plans to extend the museum with two new buildings and to create, together with Budapest Art Hall, a new Budapest Museum Quarter or Budapest Museum “Island” around Heroes Square and Andrássy Boulevard, by the year 2017.
