Explore this unique canal system (Serbian: Dunav – Tisa – Dunav – Kanal) built to control water quantities of the Danube, support water supply, allow fishing and enjoy tourism. With a total of 12,700 km² (!), the system covers the north of Vojvodina, the regions of Banat and Bačka. Total length of all the canals is 929 km. There are 51 structures to organize the water network: 24 gates, 16 locks, 5 safety gates, and 6 pumping stations. Apart from that, there are180 bridges and 14 smaller ports for goods. Along the newer canals, of the Danube – Tisa – Danube Canal system, there are 84 bridges: 62 carriageways, 19 railway bridges, and 3 pedestrian bridges. There is also a dam of the Tisa river near Novi Bečej.
The most prestigious and renown ones are the Great Bačka Canal and the Little Bačka Canal. The Great Bačka Canal, formerly known as King Peter Canal, is 118 km long and was opened in 1803. The Little Bačka Canal was built in the 1870s and once was named Franz-Joseph Canal, as well as Alexander Canal. It is 69 km long.
