Obernzell – Niederranna Stage
From the Donausteig starting place at the fountain of the castle we follow Jochensteiner road towards Jochenstein and take a left turn after some 2km. Kohlbachmühle mill invites to enjoy a break there. The path leads through the forest uphill and then we leave the valley to the right to get to Endsfelden. Out of the forest we take a break at the Donausteig resting place and recover from the uphill stretch. We hike along the road past the hamlets of Stollberg and Hitzing. Just before Krottenthal we leave the asphalt-covered road (asphalt only briefly on an access road to a house) and enter the forest of the Donauleiten hills. There we enjoy again fantastic views of the Danube (Ebenstein, Ebenstein Chapel) and eventually get to Riedl. The trail leads again into the forest and down to the Danube. In the forest we cross the border to Austria. After a brief stretch along the road we reenter the forest. Having climbed the Donauleiten hills we can take a break at Penzenstein and enjoy the view. We leave the forest and get to the village of Pühret, where food and accommodation are available. Just after Pühret we hike towards the forest and get to the next panorama spot (Pühretstein). We continue to bastion Rannariedl Castle and down to Niederranna. If you fancy and have the time you can make a detour into the Rannatal nature reserve.

Getting there
By car: Obernzell is easy to find, even if you do not have a navigation system or a map.
The Danube shows the way. You drive into the Bishop’s town of Passau, get onto the left bank of the Danube and follow the Nibelungen river downstream for another 15 kilometres.
Once you see the impressive twin towers of a Rococo church it won’t take long to get to Obernzell, the home of the Danube’s mermaid Isa.
By boat/ferry: The Danube boats of the Wurm&Köck shipping company head for Obernzell several times a day. The departure and arrival times can be taken from the schedule of Wurm&Köck. www.donauschiffahrt.de
Our ferry operates all year through. In the winter there is a reduced schedule.
