The first floor of the 1882 museum building holds a permanent exhibition on Sexaginta Prista (read more in the section of round trips, Roman Emperors and the Vienna Route) and another nearby Roman fortress Yatrus, in two halls. The only existing late Roman cavalry helmet in Bulgaria is on display, as is the golden treasure of Malak Preslavets, the unique armament of a Bulgar warrior with the earliest preserved Cyrillic inscription in the world. In the prehistoric hall, the exhibition is dedicated to the early life of mammoth hunters and farmers. The second floor shows the famous Borovo Treasure, a ritual set of five silver vessels of Thracian origin (4th century BC), discovered in 1974 in Borovo. The former military hall is now used as a “music box” and shows artefacts of the old urban Ruse culture, which around 1900 was full of dancing nights, live music celebrations, balls and concerts.
