The oldest museum not only in Odessa but in whole of Ukraine opened as City Antiquities Museum, in 1825. Restored and upgraded in 2003, and in perfect location near Primorskyy Boulevard, the classicistic building with colonnade façade houses 170 000 artifacts. In front of it, there is a copy of the famous Laocoön statue (original: Vatican museums, Rome). The collections houses items from excavations at Olvia, Khersones, Pantikapey, Tira and other ancient Greek colonies on the Black Sea, dating back 600 – 100 BC. Northern Black Sea Region is represented with items from Tripolie, Scythian, Sarmatian, and Slavs culture. Terhe is as well the only Ukrainian collection of ancient Egypt monuments. See gold and silver coins and the highlight of the museum: The so called Hoard of electrovs (gold and silver alloy coins) from Orlovka village in Odessa Region is the fourth biggest coin treasure ever found, worldwide.
